However, this one was a little different due to the Michel de Certeau reading we have been engaging with all term.

I already explained the premise in a previous blog, but I had the intention to make every single confession false from the very start. This was based off of de Certeau's theory that belief is contingent upon many variables. He asserts that something is true if you believe it to be. So it is really up to the individual to decide if something is true or not -- there is no set in stone rule that determines whether something is believable.

Going off of this idea, I knew that I wanted my video to break the taboo of talking about hook-up culture on the Lawrence University campus but I also wanted to bring in this idea that something is true if you believe it to be true. Thus was the birth of the false sexual confessions.
I wanted the viewers to actually believe that each confession was true, and for that reason I tried to choose outrageous stories that still stayed within the believable realm. However, whether or not people believed the stories to be true is ultimately up to them... and that is the whole point.

(I will be adding the video to this blog post once it finishes uploading to YouTube.)Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-88710416027577104642015-05-27T10:50:00.001-07:002015-05-27T10:50:37.439-07:00Stroszek: WTF?

I honestly had no idea what to expect before watching "Stroszek." The beginning was very slow and I found myself trying to figure out what the essential point or message of the film was, but that came later. It comes off as a film about domestic violence, and that is definitely a huge part of the film. However, I found some very deep underlying themes going on as well. Family was a theme that stuck out to me. In the beginning of the movie, Bruno starts out as a loner. He is a total underdog. He is portrayed as the loser with no friends, he is called "creepy" by the two douchebags of the film, his house is a complete mess, and he himself is scrubby as f#*$. The most important factor in my opinion is that he does not have a family. But throughout the film, he gradually expands his friend group by being himself. He befriends Eva who is being pimped out by the two douchebags. He also forms friends with an older gentleman. The three of them form a life for themselves, and even though it seems to be a poor lifestyle... they make it work. I think that is the ultimate story of the film. Finding your place with the people that care about you and the people you care about. No matter the circumstances, if you are with the people you love then it does not matter.
But then again... he dies in the end. So take that as you will.
She was a female conceptual artist that focused on female sexuality and the preconceptions that society has put on it. Through her art, she aimed to turn female sexuality into a commodity in order to get rid of the stigmas attached to it. By taking it out of a taboo context, she reclaims her sexuality as a female and makes it more relatable in a sense.

Hannah Wilke used vaginal imagery in the bulk of her artwork, creating vulvic (is that a word?) images out of materials such as clay, ceramic, lint, latex, chewing gum, chocolate, and her own body. A lot of her artwork is sculpture but she also did performance pieces where she photographed the performance.

Gestures is a popular piece of hers from 1974 where she faces the camera in extreme close-up and performs repetitive physical actions, kneading her face and pulling her skin as if it were sculptural material. Her gestures - rubbing her hands over her face and smiling so hard that she appears to be grimacing - can take on a loaded significance when seen in the context of gender performance.

Although I was regretfully unable to attend Lawton Hall's visit to our class last week, I did take the time to research him and his work. I have got to say that I appreciate his approach to art in that it is very nontraditional. He does mainly mixed media artwork as well as audio and film work. I am the type of person that when interacting with an art piece, I want all of my senses to be stimulated. And his do that. Especially his "All Your Thens for Now." When listening and watching the video performed by Katelyn King, I am intrigued. Confused, but intrigued. I will admit that I do not entirely understand the point of the piece and Lawton's intention behind it, but I can appreciate the fact that he goes outside of the box by incorporating unconventional methods to create artwork. In this one in particular, Katelyn is playing the xylohone while monologuing (is that even a word?) a musical commentary on Tim Davis' essay The Ladies' Tee. Again, I totally do not understand it and I don't even like it to be honest. But that does not mean that I cannot appreciate it.

I can tell that Lawton is an intelligent person because his artwork seems to always be a creative response to intellectual things such as the essay mentioned above, or science terminology such as in his musical piece "Geodesy." I mainly find my inspiration from visual things whereas it seem Lawton finds his from text, and that just goes to show how what inspires other people to create is very personal and can serve as an outlet for very different types of artwork.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-31288562388750506982015-04-19T21:59:00.003-07:002015-04-20T12:39:10.924-07:00IG: picoverlayz

Michel de Certeau makes reference to the differences and interactions between "place" and "space." According to him, "a place (lieu) is the order (of whatever kind) in accord with which elements are distributed in relationships of coexistence...[while] a space exists when one takes into consideration vectors of direction, velocities, and time variables. "

My space: Instagram
My place: Whatever I choose to make it

I had a lot of fun with this project. It was fun to find the "inbetweens" of typical landscape/scenery photography. Instead of taking a picture of a building, I took a picture of a parking sign on the building. Instead of taking a picture of a fraternity house, I took a picture of the garbage can in front of it. I then took images of these spaces (or places) and combined them to create a new place. A new image.

I thought that people on instagram would find these pictures to be hella laaammeeee since they aren't grand landscape picture overlays, but more so overlapping pictures of specific and kind of random things. And I found that my followers, or whoever found my pictures via hashtags, really liked the pictures that I didn't like as much. I was putting a decent amount of effort into how I edited them and which two images I decided to overlap, but it really didn't matter. They liked ones that I didn't put too much thought into. I found that to be interesting. If I knew that earlier, I probably could have done even more.
Social media is arguably the most common source of digital media nowadays and so it only makes sense.

I am going to be drawing on a recently popular phenomenom of picture overlays aka taking two or more pictures and overlapping them to create something so0o0o0o hipster. Disclaimer: I have been a victim of doing this. There are tons of apps that you can download on your mobile device that will do the overlapping for you. You can even go as far as choosing the position of the pictures, the filter, if one picture is more transparent than the other, adding text, etc. I find that most commonly people use pictures of landscapes and overlap them with images of people. Again, guilty. So that is what I am going to do. However, I am going to focus on the "nothingness" in these landscapes. Instead of taking a general plane picture of the landscape, I will focus on individual parts... the in-between. Honing in on seemingly random parts of the overall picture, and overlaying them with selfies by using an app.
I am going to see if I can use this as some sort of social experiment too. So I will go HAM with the hashtags and see how many people dig my super sweet shots.

Let's see how this goes.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-26274153299885118092015-04-12T15:35:00.001-07:002015-04-12T20:04:02.254-07:00The Mundane

In Michel de Certeau's book, The Practice of Everyday Life, he states that "'stories' provide the decorative container of a narrativity for everyday practices. To be sure, they describe only fragments of these practices. They are no more than its metaphors" (71).

The premise of my short video responds to this statement, and relies on the mundane
activities that I do each and every day. I tell my story in order to provide a narratively of my everyday practices. I take you through my day from start
to finish in just a few minutes, emphasizing the things that I do without even
thinking (i.e. swallowing, blinking, cracking my knuckles, clicking a pen,
etc.) The film is cyclical in the sense where I start by waking up to my alarm
clock, opening the blinds, getting ready for the day, etc. and I also end the film
with setting my alarm and turning out the lights. However, by the middle of the
short video it just becomes a repetition of various tedious and uninteresting things
that I do throughout the day.

The viewer is meant to feel bored by the video. In order to
accomplish this, I chose to give the clips a cool-toned, almost sickly filter
thus sucking the life out of them. I also added a droning room sound that is
played consistently throughout the short video. I repeated some clips too such
as me itching myself, blinking, putting on mascara with the aim of the viewer
becoming bored by watching clips that are not only monotonous but repetitive.

There are so many things that people do every day without
thinking, and my video is meant to draw attention to those things. We often
times neglect to remember bits and pieces of our day, but if we choose to be
intentional about our actions and conscious of what we are doing, we might find
that we not only remember most of our day but also live each day with more
purpose.
I will use video as my medium, recording several different mundane activities that I do on a weekly basis
The meat of the clips is going to be found in the absurdly tedious/typical things I do on a typical day... closeups of tearing open the package to a granola bar, sipping my coffee, opening the door to my room, typing on my laptop keyboard, etc. I am going to try to find the things that I do without even thinking. I see the video beginning with my alarm clock going off, and ending with a clip of me in my bed, in my room, under the covers, and then the lights go off thus signaling the end to the day.

I am going to record these individual actions and combine them in a video with editing that communicates a mundane feeling. I anticipate using a dull filter such as black and white, or one with a green tint. Avoiding smooth transitions but rather quick cuts, and repeating these clips over and over in different sequence with quickening speeds to communicate how it is a routine for me.
My thought is that this method to editing may communicate chaos more than a mundane routine. So.... on the other hand, I could do the opposite and edit the clips to be very slow in order to show that it's a monotonous and boring routine. I may experiment with both of these approaches and decide which is best in the end

I want to make this video personal and for that reason I am pulling elements from my own life week by week, day to day.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-56513839230803797932014-11-16T15:59:00.003-08:002014-11-16T15:59:46.938-08:00My Senior Project: A Work in Progress... (Fashion in Spain)As some of you may or may not know, I have had to start my Senior Project while in Spain. I am an art major and while some seniors have a "Senior Thesis"... mine is called a Senior Project. What that means is I have to come up with a way to demonstrate what I have learned in my major and display that through whatever artistic medium I feel is best.
I have always been really interested in fashion, and culture. I'm sure you knew the former considering this is a fashion blog.... But anyway, I decided to combine both into my Senior Project. I am going to be creating a Spanish fashion magazine. In order to do this, I have had to take photos of Spaniards here in Salamanca. The magazine is going to be strictly on women around my age. Think of a magazine like InStyle, or Seventeen or something of that sort. That age range will be my demographic. I plan to create segments in my magazine such as a "Get The Look," "What's In My Closet," etc. It's a work in progress and my ideas are constantly changing.

But today I lucked out and was able to plan an actual photoshoot with three Spanish girls for my project. I've gotta say it's a little nerve-wracking having to walk up to strangers and ask them, in Spanish, if I can take their photo for my "proyecto de la moda" (Fashion project). So meeting with girls who already knew my objective and were excited to help me out put my nerves at ease. Also I was able to actually control the types of photos I wanted and it was overall a really fun time.

Here are some sneak peak photos from the shoot!
I tried to create outfits that fit for the different seasons here thus far.

This is an outfit that I saw lot of during my first multiple weeks here. A lot of girls (specifically teenage) would be rocking a tight cami that ended just above their hip bones, or above their belly buttons depending on how risque they wanted to be that day..., jean shorts, black platform sneakers (platform sneakers are a huge trend here for young girls), and of course a small backpack. I´m not sure that you´d see me walking the streets in this outfit, but it´s definitely a European look that I saw when I first arrived. It makes sense too though. It was ungodly hot upon arrival so why fuss with anything more than a tank top and shorts?

This next outfit I saw more of in mid September to early October. Printed pants. Everywhere. And people of all ages were wearing them. I wouldn´t even know where to start with them, but people here knew how to style them (for the most part). I saw a lot of people just wearing them with jean jackets which is always a safe way to go when you´re wearing something else so loud. I was even tempted to buy a pair but I knew that I´d only get a couple months wear out of them, and then it´s back to blizzards and below zero weather in Wisconsin. But a lot of other girls in my program bought themselves a pair (super easy to find in stores too because like I said, they were everywhere. And sometimes for less than 10 euro!). Also, I love this style of sandal. I saw some back in the States and wanted one since then, but didn´t realize how big of a trend they are in the hotter months in Spain. I saw people my age wearing them as well as ladies in their 70s. Must be comfortable.

Finally, we´re in Fall. It came quickly too. I feel like in a matter of a couple of days it went from 60s-70s to 40s-50s weather here. So now this is what I´ve been seeing a lot. Not too different from the states I´d like to add. The military green parka seems to be a universal trend (especially the ones with the little dangly strings in the back... you ladies know what I´m talking about... I hope). As well as knee high boots. Another universal fall trend. I don´t think knee high boots will ever go out of style for those of us living where Fall and Winter are a real thing. But don´t quote me on that. It rains here on and off so I also see a lot of Spaniards wearing rain boots on a daily basis, just on the off chance that it might rain. They treat them as a normal day-to-day boot in a sense. I don´t however see many people wearing leggings which is really disappointing since I live in leggings during the colder months. People here still for the most part stick with a pair of jeans.
I´ve also seen some people layering their sweaters over collared shirts, which isn´t anything outrageous... but it´s nice to know that they are still putting some effort into their outfits whereas when its cold I just throw on a sweater and call it a day. Oh, and I added an umbrella just because people are borderline afraid of the rain here and are always prepared for the rain. Always.
I'm still here. I wish I could have been a bit more consistent with my blog, but hey ... better late than never, right? People say that, so let's go with that.

If you didn't know, I am studying in Spain right now (what!?). So I decided to take a bit of inspiration from being here to create a look that I would wear here in Salamanca.
Fall in Spain is close to perfect. It's still in the 70's! Although I must say I do miss the chillier weather which comes along with Fall in Wisconsin. I never thought I'd say that. But then again, I hear it's in the 40s and 50s there already, and I do not necessarily wish for it to be that cool yet. So I am soaking up all the sun I can before it starts cooling down.

Back to the outfit I put together. This is definitely an outfit I would wear for the weather here right now. Throw on a pair of jeans, cute booties, throw on a cardigan and you're good to go. You really do not need to pull out the fall jacket yet. You can probably even ditch the cardigan, but I always bring some type of outerwear with me wherever I go since I'm always scared of being somewhere cold and not being reliable to do anything about it.

So yeah, if I owned these clothes... this is what I would be wearing right about now. Actually, I own that dark cherry lipstick but that's a minor detail. I think dark cherry is the perfect color to wear for the fall, especially on your nails, like the one shown in this post. But back to the outfit...essentially it's just jeans and a tee, but the over-sized cardigan, cut-out booties, and chunky statement necklace make it a bit more interesting. I also decided to add the black backpack because most people my age wear little backpacks instead of purses here in Spain. I like this one because it's sleek enough to go with anything and, even though it's a backpack, the gold hardware and geometric lines make it less casual.

Maybe I'll make a "Most-Seen Outfits in Spain" post next... although that title needs some work.

Hasta entonces.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-34346862240932041112014-06-04T12:06:00.001-07:002014-06-04T13:05:18.417-07:00The Love(less) WorkshopFor my final project in Digital Processes, I knew that I wanted to do something that involved being open and personal with others. I wanted to put together an event that involved people engaging in an activity that allowed them to be vulnerable. I know, however, that this idea is not entirely welcome by everyone and it would be difficult to attract participants. For this reason, I staged "The Love(less) Worskshop." I reserved a room in the Warch Campus Center, created a Facebook event inviting people to participate, and it came together. During the event, each participant was told to write a break-up letter and a love letter, and that is what they did. I had songs about love playing during the event itself in order to stimulate the writing process.

In "Relational Aesthetics" by Nicolas Bourriaud, he talks about the "arena of exchange." He states, "The exhibition is the special place where such momentary groupings may occur, governed as they are by differing principles…[and the arena of exchange] must be judged on the basis of aesthetic criteria, in other words, by analyzing the coherence of its form, and then the symbolic value of the 'world' it suggests to us, and of the images of human relations reflected by it" (18).
My event aimed to create this arena of exchange where everyone participating in the same vulnerable activity, and were thus able to relate to one another in this way; by being vulnerable and tapping into their personal feelings. It was my effort to comment on the "world" of social barriers that exists and to delve into the "world" of openness where people are able to relate to one other on a personal level.

After they wrote the letters, I interviewed each person and asked them the same few questions.
Here is my video documentation of the event and interviews.

Enjoy!
The example of performance is the most classic of all. Once the performance is over, all that remains is documentation that should not be confused with the work itself" (29).
He also states, "The exploration of relations existing between, for instance, the artist and his/her gallery owner may determine forms and a project" (33).

My project will combine his two concepts expressed in these two quotes: art being an ephemeral experience and consisting of collaboration.

I drew my inspiration from Sophie Calle's break-up letter project where she had individuals analyze a break-up letter. Love and pain are sensitive topics and I enjoyed the fact that this break-up letter had the opportunity to surface these feelings in other people, through use of analysis.
My project will be different, however...

A group of individuals will be tapping into their feelings and write what they feel when given the instruction to "write a break up letter" and "write a love letter." They will be not required to write a whole letter, but a few sentences to express their feelings.
(Alcohol may be provided in this social setting in order to serve as a catalyst for these open feelings)
Once everyone who wishes to participate has anonymously written their sentences, I will combine the sentences of the break up letter to form one collaborative break up letter. Same with the love letter.

The purpose is not to have this documentation at the end, but the documentation rather serves as proof of the event. The art in this project is the social event, people socializing and opening themselves up and being vulnerable on paper. It may be difficult to get people to take this seriously, but that is okay! I am flexible and open to whatever the outcome may be. If people think about a specific person they once loved and write anonymously about them, then great! If people write a cheesy, borderline-humorous love letter... that is okay too.

The experience is the art, and part of the beauty of this art is being open to the unexpected.

Robert Smithson, during his short life of 35 years, defied conventional art and traditional approaches to art through his use of non-traditional art materials and creating art that represents form and as being one with the earth.
He is most famous for his earthworks like the Spiral Jetty which was meant to be an ephemeral experience as well as defy conventional art by placing the art in the physical landscape as opposed to on it. This 1,500 ft long and 15 ft wide jetty extends into the Great Salt Lake in Utah and allowed for visitors to experience the art as a journey through walking on it.
Robert Smithson created artwork that was meant to exist outside of the gallery setting and for this reason, Bourriaud name-drops him in his book called "Relational Aesthetics." Smithson allowed for viewers to think about art in a different, non-conventional way and thus contributed to the idea of relational aesthetics.

I already knew a bit about who Vivian Maier is because my dance teacher, Rebecca Salzer, choreographed and performed a dance based on Maier's found photography.
The mystery behind Vivian Maier is the fact that during her 40 years as a nanny, she took more than 100,000 photographs (primarily of people and city landscapes).. however, she never showed them to anybody. They only became visible to the public eye when John Maloof, a local Chicago historian and collector, found them. So that raises the question.... why didn't she ever show her photographs to anyone? Why did she keep them locked in a storage closet of her apartment.

Bannos, being a photography professor at Northwestern, was mainly intrigued in Vivian Maier's photography equipment, and tracing her whereabouts through the photographs themselves. I found what Bannos discovered about Maier to be quite interesting. Most of the public view Vivian Maier as a nanny who practiced photography, but Bannos finds her to be a photographer who happened to be a nanny.
Through studying the photographs, she found that Maier was actually well-versed in photography seeing as she knew how to use the most up-to-date cameras at the time and was able to intentionally capture moments how she wanted them -- where that be in deep focus, or shallow focus, etc.

Pamela Bannos opened my eyes to view Vivian Maier is another light. Instead of viewing her as a nanny who happened to take photographs, it is truly the other way around. Photography was her life and devoted it to the camera.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-64127599871373085872014-04-20T18:38:00.001-07:002014-04-23T19:21:04.283-07:00Relational Art: Curls with a Flat IronNicolas Bourriaud continues to hold this idea that, essentially, anything is relational art. At least that is how it seems to me. He proposes that it is this new, unconventional idea that has never been proposed before and that is because human relation is the base for the artwork, and that has never been an art venue in the past. Thus, relational art does not have to contain a source of human interaction. As long as it is unconventional, ephemeral, and the viewer/participator comes away from it with a slightly new viewpoint or idea... it is relational art.
So. For my next project I will present the art of curling one's hair with a flat iron. To do this, I will utilize a flat iron, heat protectant, and perhaps a mirror so that I do not burn my head. To many, and even to me to a certain extent, this would not be considered artwork. However, according to Bourriaud it would be. It is a demonstration. An ephemeral artwork. And those who view this demonstration will walk away with knowledge that they may not have had beforehand.
Many "beauty gurus" from YouTube seem to already be participating in this relational art according to Bourriaud. They create numerous tutorials on fashion and beauty ranging from how to contour the face, create certain hair-dos, and dress appropriately for different occasions.
Here are some prime examples:

Heatless Curls Hair Tutorial by Luxy Hair

So I guess you could say that my relational art demonstration will be similar to theirs. Expect for the fact that I am doing it in the name of art.

After viewing the raw footage of my "how-to" video, I realized just how goofy it was. I jumbled my words, and just really did not explain the process very well overall. So I decided to go where the project was heading and edit my video in a way that enhanced the goofiness and it turned out as a mockery. In a good way. I want people to watch it and understand that I am making fun of myself and not taking myself seriously.

Enjoy.
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-68528615028311864142014-04-13T17:30:00.000-07:002014-04-13T17:30:49.750-07:00Relational Aesthetics: Social IdentityIn Bourriaud's book called "Relational Aesthetics," he says that technology, new media, and the market is replacing social interaction. He states, "the general mechanisation of social functions gradually reduces the social space. Just a few years ago [keep in mind this book was written in the mid-90's], the telephone wake-up call service employed human beings, but now we are woken up by a synthesised voice... The automatic cash machine has become the transit model for the most elementary of social functions, and professional behavior patterns are modelled on the efficiency of the machines replacing them... Contemporary art is definitely developing a political project when it endevours to move into the relational realm by turning it into an issue" (17).

And my "political project" takes place on the social realm of Facebook.
I had three people who are each close to me on a different level (my boyfriend of two years, my best friend from home of 7 years, and my close friend from Lawrence of less than a year) create a Facebook profile for me to the best of their ability. Each of them had to fill out my personal information, my interests (movies, TV shows, music, etc.) including choosing a cover photo that I would like and an outfit that I would wear in a profile picture.
By doing this, I aim to comment on the changing social realm of the 21st century. We put so much time into creating our online identity in hopes (sometimes) that it influences how we are seen in the real world. But how accurate is this only portrayal? Are people really able to get to know someone just by browsing their Facebook page? Well... that is what I wanted my three subjects to think about as they were creating my new profile.
Here is the profile made by Augie (my boyfriend), Haley (my best friend), and Izzy (my LU friend).

I noticed a lot of similarities in what my three participants chose to include on my profile page. Two of them chose artsy cover photos, they all chose mainly hip-hop music as my musical interests, and they all chose some of the same movies and TV shows that I watch. But when asking each of them what they realized after participating in this relationally aethestic political project... here is what they said.

Izzy: "I might not know specific interests such as your favorite movies, or where you have traveled, but that seems to be superficial information. People get to know others on social media through a superficial lens and it is often times a doctored image of that person because you can choose what people know about you. You can choose parts of your identity to share, but it doesn't really mean anything. The shows you watch and books you read do not say anything about you as a person. But I was still able to be more or less accurate because I know you as a person... so I could make educated guesses."

Haley: "I guess I don't know a lot about what you like to watch on TV. And it's really easy to create a random profile and make yourself seem like whoever you want to be, and I see how people can so easily set up false profiles... which can be so creepy."

I didn't write down what Augie had told me, but he felt the same way Izzy felt. During the process of creating my new profile, they both expressed uncertainty while choosing my interests... but in the end they made an overall very accurate facebook profile because they know me as a person in real life, not as I come across online.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-37296533876678981372014-04-08T18:25:00.000-07:002014-04-09T17:26:06.214-07:00MY SPRING WISHLIST: Accessories/MiscellaneousSpring is the time when you can finally wear brighter colors and less clothing. When I think of spring accessories, these are the items that I would want.

A big floppy happy is the stand-out piece. Not only will it protect you from the sun, but it will do it fashionably. I love this one because it's made out of straw and has that perfect beach feel. I have really really really been wanting a bright coral colored crossbody bag, and this one is just perfect. It can add a great pop of color into any outfit that is lacking in the color department (which would be most of my outfits). I felt it necessary to include two pairs of shades, because an accessory like sunglasses can really define an outfit. A pair of aviators and a more stand-out pair of circle, cat-eye shades will keep you prepared for whichever vibe you want your outfit to have that day. It's also time to rock bold nail polish. I personally love this blue color by sinful shades which also has a really great formula, and this lilac color by Essie is perfect since nothing screams spring more than pastels.

I also wanted to include two different necklaces because while the statement necklace is very colorful and spring-appropriate, I would be more likely to want to wear something lighter and less heavy like the long gold necklace since it's already getting hotter as it is... you might not want something weighing you down. The Kate Spade watch is just a must. Well, for me at least. There's nothing really spring about it, but it's still on my wishlist. Now if you have hair that tends to get frizzy with the warmer weather, investing in a hair product like Wen is great to tame the frizz without making your hair crunchy or feel like there's lots of product in it. Again... who wants to feel weighed down in the spring when it's already getting hotter as it is? The Benefit Porefessional is also a great product which blurs the appearance of pores. And I'm not lying when I say that. I own this product and it is a miracle-worker, especially for the oilier skin types. So put this on before you go out on a hot spring day and your makeup won't run and your face will stay matte. Now for people like me who take a while to get tan, this Physicians Formula "Boosted Bronzer" will help you attain that sun-kissed skin. It's like not other bronzers that will make your face look dirty or too orange, it's the perfect shade for that glowing, tan effect if you just place it in the contours of your face. Last but not least, the NYX butter glosses. These have such a creamy formula and are great for the spring time due to their high gloss, but they won't feel sticky like a lot of other lip glosses out there.

Happy Spring!

I had to look up what maladroit meant and it basically means clumsy. And I definitely got that sense from her exhibit. It was organized chaos. Emmons and her exhibit embraces varied creation stores and systems of knowledge. She makes the point that we come from everywhere and nowhere. Her exhibit is about finding grace and insight in the lowly tinkerer's handiwork, and I think that was definitely accomplished.

Upon walking into the exhibit, It definitely seemed to be a universe made up of objects found in a "tinkerer's workshop." There was everything from shiny spherical balls, old clocks, tools, broken parts of machinery, old tickets, dice, and the walls were covered in shiny balls resembling stars and plaques where an astrological sign was written. The exhibit was definitely a collaborative experience between the artist and the viewer.

Emmons' aim of the exhibit was to ensure that low aspects of popular culture are given serious consideration as a part of the spectrum of human experience. I, however, did not understand her exhibit in that way. It did not cause me to consider the objects in the exhibit more seriously, it was more of just an experience. It was like a universe on earth due to it being made up of all of these human-made objects. It also seemed, in my opinion, to comment on the reality of time. Each of the four tiny baby carriages (or maybe they were wagons?) had numbers on them in ascending order with different objects in them.

Ten - dice, tickets, games

Twelve - shiny balls

Nineteen - hardware, metal, tools, machinery

Fifty - clocks

I was trying to make sense of these wagons and why they were ordered in this way, why they had the specific numbers of them, and why she chose to put each specific object in the certain wagon. It seemed to me to be a commentary on time and life. That at age ten, we are more considered with games and having fun. Then at age twelves, we are more interested in.... shiny objects?? (I'm still trying to figure that one out). And at age nineteen, we are becoming more knowledge and aware of how things work, hence the tools and machinery. And then finally at age fifty, we are becoming more aware of time.... the time that has passed and the little time that is left in one's life.

Even if that may not have been the aim of Emmons' work, it surely resonated with me and caused me to think more about the spectrum of life and human experience.

P.S. - I would include photos but there are no photos of the work in this particular exhibit anywhere online.

So for that, shame on you. Go watch it. I'm so sad they ended the show... but anyway. Gillian's style is very bohemian, and a bit grungy too sometimes. Her character in 90210, Ivy, even had a very bohemian-vibe. Now I wouldn't normally wear the outfits she puts together.. but I love how laid-back they are!

I chose to do a Look For Less of one of her outfits that I would wear. It's definitely on the simpler and easier-to-wear side of her style, but I like it.

What I really like about this outfit is how easy it is to switch up. The only thing that makes it more on the grungy/edgy side is the boots paired with the fedora. But if you change into some ballet flats and put your hair in a bun, it instantly becomes more preppy. Then again if you change into some flip-flops and a floppy hat, it's just a super simple and laid back outfit. She is styling the outfit mainly with accessories which is the way to go!
You can take very basic pieces like denim shorts and a striped top and instantly make it more interesting and more fitted for your style with the appropriate accessories.

Okay. Now go watch 90210 on Netflix.
He gives examples such as ATMs replacing the interaction of going to a bank and issuing a transaction with another individual. Also, back in the day, people used to be woken up by a telephone wake-up call service. Now a synthesized voice known as Siri is our wake-up call, replacing the human voice we once knew.

I want to expand on this idea and make the claim that not only is technology replacing social interaction among individuals... but it is becoming our entire reality. It is so easy to get lost in the Internet when you create a space so personal to you. When you open your browser, you have placed specific tabs underneath the URL bar and these "bookmarks" indicate your most-used websites. That right there is already a personalization (I'm coining that word for my own purposes) of internet space. Furthermore, obvious places like Facebook have become our new social empire. We no longer need to walk to our friend's house in order to talk, we can just send them a Facebook message. Facebook is the place that has all of our "friends" and it is personalized so that we only see news on our newsfeed from people that we interact with the most on Facebook. Talk about a social empire -- this website has really become our new "world" so to speak.
For me personally, Pinterest is my "world." I don't mean that in the sense that I worship the site, but I mean that it really is personalized for my own interests and has become a place where I only see things (posts, pictures...) that I like. The posts on my Pinterest board consist mainly of pictures of street style, fashion, and beautiful places around the world. It has more or less become a vision of a life I hope to attain one day. I'm sure Pinterest is like this for many people that use it often. Even YouTube. I am a huge YouTube person if that is a thing... I am subscribed to 103 people/channels on YouTube. ONE HUNDRED AND THREE. That is 103 people that I have consciously decided that I want to see what they have to say whenever they have to say it. Most of my YouTube subscriptions are to "beauty gurus" aka people who post videos on fashion and beauty. That right there is my environment. I am watching them and hearing what they say, watching their vlogs (them video recording their every day lives for all to see... yes that is a thing). That too has become my social reality. I can even post a comment on the videos and respond to the person. These beauty gurus have really formed relationships with their viewers.

What I am saying is that new media has really taken over the realm of social interaction and has more so become our new social environment where we not only can talk conveniently to others but create a world of our own as opposed to the real world that we live in outside of our computer screens.

In order to simulate this technological reality, I really just want it to be an experience for the audience. I want them to go on Facebook for the duration of my presentation and just immerse themselves in that alter reality. Or go on Pinterest if you have one and scroll through your dashboard and realize how these sites and their content are you. You have chosen what you want to see and who you want to talk to and who you want to see pictures of on your newsfeed, etc.Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00532536776945125207noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8451907196724047322.post-48623405666445772462014-03-28T19:19:00.000-07:002014-04-01T19:42:36.388-07:00MY SPRING WISHLIST: ShoesIf I could choose a hefty amount of shoes for the spring... these would be it. I notice now that there really isn't a whole lot of variation among these shoes. I tend to stick with what I know and like, and that is darker colors and sandals with straps. Even the ballet flats have straps, what can I say. I just want to know that I if I buy a pair of shoes, that I can wear them with multiples different outfits. And darker shoes are more wearable (in my opinion) than colored shoes.

Anyway! These are the shoes that I would love to rock during the spring. As far as the simple black flip flops go... I added those because I literally own zero pairs of flip flops. I know, weird... who doesn't own a pair of flip flops? I just would rather wear strappy sandals. The whole thing in between your toes freaks me out... but I hear that Old Navy's flip flops are super comfortable.
I had to add a pair of espadrilles. I made a whole post on what to wear with espadrilles, but I just love them. I also love the rubber Birkenstock-style sandals from Zara. I had to include both the pink and black pair. I can't choose, might as well choose both. Steven Madden came out with the "ecentric" shoe which has been extremely popular for the spring (the cheetah printed one). Forever21 has a decent dupe for them (the black pair underneath the Steven Madden ones). They don't have the faux fur like Steven Madden's but I don't care much for the fur anyway.
Yep. I'm trying to start a number of consistent posts. I still plan on doing the "Look For Less" series but a girl can multitask.
I desperately need to go shopping for spring and summer clothes. I feel this happens every year.. whenever it comes to winter I say "I have no winter clothes!" and the same goes for when spring and summer rolls around.. I feel like I have very few clothes for the season. Where do my clothes go?? Or is it that trends are just changing so frequently and I can't keep up. Either way, I can't be alone here.

I'm really digging solid color one pieces for the spring, if you can't tell. Zara has some really nice solid dresses and rompers/jumpsuits. Not only are solid colors a nice pop of color for the spring, but they give you tons of freedom to accessorize. I included a black romper because not only is black my favorite "color" to wear, but it almost acts like an LBD (little black dress). It's just as much of a staple to me in the warmer months.
I'm also not one for form fitting clothes... I'd be surprised if you ever see me in a bodycon dress. That's why I am very on board with the recent shift dress trend. I also love rompers and (some) jumpsuits because they are so easy! There's no need to find a top and bottom to put together... your outfit is already planned for you. And I'm okay with that.
I felt that it wouldn't be doing her justice to just post one of her outfits. Her outfits can be so different! It was only fair to post a more casual outfit as opposed to the formal one from my earlier post.
ANYWAY. If I saw these clothing pieces individually... the black overalls, the chunky knit, the muscle tee... I would not imagine putting them in an outfit together. That's what I love about Alexa's style. She puts outfits together that I would not have thought of myself. I'm not saying that this outfit is outrageous or anything, I just give her credit for her ability to dress outside of the box, if you will.
This outfit of hers seems to be a mix of the generations. She's got a grandma knit cardigan, overalls making it more kiddish, and a muscle tee which is a trend more for my generation (those in their 20's). Bravo, Alexa. You pulled it off. I know that the muscle tee isn't the exact one she is wearing, but she is a huge fan of Kurt Cobain so I figured it would be appropriate.
We should all just start buying individual clothing pieces that we find interesting without thinking, 'what can I wear with this?' If you like it -- GET IT. Eventually, you might surprise yourself and wind up with a mix of pieces in order to put together an all-together pretty unique outfit.
If I had to choose one, Alexa Chung would probably be the girl that comes to mind first. She achieves this cute mix of preppy and grungy. This outfit that she is wearing actually exemplifies that perfectly in my opinion. It's still preppy to a certain extent because of the formal collared blouse, but she adds edge with the leather pencil skirt and strappy heels. This is definitely a more done-up look of hers. I might do another Look For Less of one of her more casual outfits.
